The subject of this relief is taken from the novel Numa Pompilius, written by Jean-Pierre Claris, Chevalier de Florian (1755–1794). It depicts the moment when Numa bids farewell to his father Pomponius, as he leaves to succeed Romulus as King of the Romans.
