Leighton made countless preparatory chalk drawings for his oil paintings. This sheet contains five studies, including a standing draped figure on the left that has not yet been related to a final composition. The four remaining drawings are all identifiable as exercises for a painting entitled Bacchante (ca. 1892, private collection).
