Clément studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with Michel-Martin Drölling (1786–1851) and Édouard Picot (1786–1868), and won the coveted Prix de Rome in 1856. His oeuvre ranged from history and genre painting to Orientalism and portraiture. In this drawing, as in a number of other self-portraits made throughout his career, he emphasizes his status as a working artist, palette in hand.
