Enrico Tarenghi (Italian, 1848–1938)
A Caravan Passing a Pyramid, ca. 1869
Oil on canvas, 28 x 21 in.
1995.48
Although a prolific and successful Orientalist painter, Tarenghi never journeyed to the Middle East. Like other Orientalists who “stayed home,” Tarenghi relied on photographs, magazine illustrations, prints, paintings, and books. Here, Tarenghi depicts a popular subject of an isolated Bedouin on camelback traversing the desert sands.
