Stannard first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1856, selecting four paintings of the seasons, a theme she recycled at least once more in 1872. Here, the artist chose an oval composition to express her vision of the winter’s torpor by the dead bird’s soft brown feathers with a cluster of brilliant red berries against the snow.
